Fireproof Leadership. Leading Fearlessly. Hope for the Helpful. Three books built on a single conviction - focus on the people before the problem.

"Leadership isn't something you learn once. It's something you build - decision by decision, under pressure, over time."
John Alston entered the fire service because he believed in protecting people. What he discovered over four decades was that the most dangerous place in any organization isn't the fire ground - it's the leadership gap. He spent 31 years with the Jersey City Fire Department, moving from Heavy Rescue Technician through the ranks as Deputy Chief of Special Operations, Chief of Training, and Chief of Staff. He then served nine years as Fire Chief of the New Haven Fire Department - one of the most complex command environments in the country.
As a Master Instructor for the International Association of Fire Fighters, he trained hundreds of firefighters and fire officers across the nation. As Operations Director and Chair of Curriculum for the Carl Holmes Executive Development Institute, he built the programs that turned Emergency Management Officers into executive-level leaders.
As a front-line Heavy Rescue Technician at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, he responded to one of the most complex crises in modern history. That day confirmed what four decades of service had been building toward - that leadership forged under real pressure is the only kind that holds when organizations need it most.
Today, through Fire Officer Trust, Chief Alston serves executives, corporate teams, government agencies, nonprofits, law enforcement, and public safety organizations worldwide. He is a certified Executive Coach, DISC Behavioral Analyst, and Emotional Intelligence Evaluator, as well as a John Maxwell Executive Director. His core belief has never changed: focus on the people before the problem.
